TVN's Three Musketeers drama

I was being quite sceptical when I read that TVN cable network is airing their new Sageuk drama entitled 'Three Musketeers'. First thing that came into my mind was the novel by Alexandre Dumas feauting Athos, Porthos, Aremis and d'Artagnan. What?! A korean drama from a famous French novel? You got to be kidding...

However this proves me wrong- it's a typical Sageuk action period drama '삼총사' tells the story of a young man Park Dal Hyang (played by CNBlues leader Jung Yong Hwa) who becomes a famous General at the war period during King Injo's time. He was a typical country bumpkin who rode days in his old horse to Hanyang City (which is Seoul capital) to take the government exam. He succeeded in winning a spot as a government official and winning his trust from the Crown Prince So Hyun (played by Lee Jin Wook) and his faithful 2 Royal Bodyguards, Heo Seung Po (Yang Dong Geun) and Ahn Min Seo (Jung Hae In).

Seo Hyun Jin plays the role as Crown Princess Yoon Seo and she is cute in her facial expressions and lonely life in the Palace after being forced into the Royal Family. Originally she was Dal Hyang's childhood sweetheart but been rushed to marry the So Hyun when his meant to be bride, Mi Ryung mysteriously disappeared. Lee Jin Wook as the Crown Prince is cynical and witty in his ways of talking to his royal guards including sarcastic remarks to Yoon Seo. What brings laughters to the screen is Seung Po and Min Seo. Looking at the big age gap, Seung Po is an older playboy person who is forced into early marriage with an ugly wife meanwhile Min Seo is a handsome young guard but lives a secluded monk life since he was a kid.

Each week TVN screens an episode.. and gets is into tension when Crown Prince So Hyun is aiding his useless father King Injo to fend off invagers from China & Mongolia. In history, it's written that King Injo is a hopeless ruler who sends his reliable Crown Prince & Crown Princess to China to master their skills and build a good relationship with their enemies.

King Injo is feable as ever and easily swayed by his corrupted Ministers thus listening to rumours and back-stabbing. In history, eventually Crown Prince So Hyun was poisoned and died. Even the Crown Princess was sent for exile and led a tragic ending as well. What a pity...
